What is a Bolt Pattern?
A bolt pattern is the diameter of an imaginary circle that the points of the lug nuts on a wheel fit into bolt patterns can be 4, 5, 6, or 8 lug holes. A bolt pattern of 4×100 indicates a 4-lug hole pattern on a circle with a diameter of 100mm.
Bolt patterns with an even number of lugs are measured from bolt center to bolt center while 5 & 6 lug bolt patterns are measured from the top or bottom of the lug to the center of the next lug. 8 lug bolt patterns are measured from center to center across the middle two lugs. Measuring Bolt Patterns
Bolt patterns (or lug patterns) are used to determine vehicle fitment and to describe the number of bolts used on a wheel. Measuring bolt patterns can be a little tricky, but with a few common tools, it’s easy to get a perfect fit.
Most bolt patterns are expressed in the following format:
- Number of Bolts
- Pitch Circle Diameter (PCD)
- Bolt Circle Diameter (BCD)
For example, a 5 x 114.3 bolt pattern means that there are 5 bolts, and the distance between each bolt is 114.3mm. The BCD is simply the diameter of the circle formed by the centers of the bolts. In this example, the BCD would be 5 x 114.3mm or 572.5mm.
To measure your own bolt pattern:
- Place a sheet of paper over one of your vehicle’s tires so that it covers the entire surface. Use a pen or marker to trace the contours of the tire onto the paper. This will give you an outline of where your bolt holes are located.
- Measure the distance between two adjacent bolt holes, using a ruler or measuring tape. This distance is called the pitch circle diameter, or PCD for short. Be sure to measure from hole center to hole center – don’t just measure between flats!
- To calculate your vehicle’s BCD, simply multiply your PCD by 2. So, if your PCD is 5 x 114mm, your BCD would be 572mm (114mm x 2 = 572mm).

- You can also measure from one side of a hole to another (side-to-side), but be aware that this measurement will be larger than your true bolt pattern as it includes half of one of the bolt holes.
